Remediation of three environmental hot spots in BiH - Results PDF
Remediation of three environmental hot spots in BiH - ResultsThis is the main component of the programme and based on the more detailed information submitted by the local authorities and/or site owners about the potential project sites and the interest expressed, three particular hot spots were selected through consultation between the UNDP, relevant national authorities, the Embassy of the Netherlands in BiH and the civil society:

- University Clinic Center, Gradina, Tuzla
- Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculoses, Slavinovici, Tuzla
- Local Community of Dragodol/Tusanj, Tuzla

The priority has been given to Tuzla municipality as one of the most polluted, not only in BiH, but in the region as well with trans-boundary effect. Analysis of air quality from automatic network of measuring stations in Tuzla has shown that the air quality in Tuzla is very poor and that types of project such as connecting the two hospitals and Dragodol community into the district heating from the Tuzla Thermal Power Plant’s heat transmission system is justifiable and preferred. Heating system in both hospitals was based on coal fired boilers - source of pollution in very center of Tuzla City, while a community of Dragodol/Tusanj is covered by individual and separated residential heating systems. During the heating season, the total emission of SO2 from these three hot spots amounts to app 258 tons, 77 tons of NOX, 165 tons of particulates, and 16 730 tons of CO2 . Total consumption of coal by the two hospitals is 11,000 tons per year and they generate approximately 2,000 m3 of slag and ash per year. The coal used has the highest sulphur content of all coals sourced in BiH. Coal’s’ total sulphur content is approximately 2.3% mass, of which approximately 1.5% is combustible. In order to eliminate above specified emission of gases, central heating system in two hospitals has been completely restructured and connected to district heating system for winter season heating and winter season sanitary hot water. Coal based boilers have been turned into natural gas boilers for supply of whole year steam, non-winter season sanitary hot water, serve as secondary heating system in case of district heating malfunction. Collective residential units with 650 household in a local Community of Dragodol/ Tusanj have been connected to district heating system (additional 100 individual residential units can be connected to new network). With the above works, described sources of air pollution at Gradina and Slavinovici hospitals have been completely eliminated and significantly decreased in Dragodol.
